Instagram

One of my new favourite apps for iPhone is Instagram.  Instagram is promoted as “a fun & quirky way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures“.  I describe it as micro-photo-blogging; a Twitter-esque social networking experience using photos, with flavours of Fourquare and Facebook.  It’s quick, fun and creative and it is perfect for a photo lover and social media junkie like me.  You take photos in-app or select them from your camera roll and apply one of the dozen filters to give it retro instamatic look.  You can add location information – which is slickly integrated with Foursquare – a description, and you can chose on a photo by photo basis to share on Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, Tumblr and Foursquare.  Photos are then published in a feed, which is similar to your Facebook feed.  You can ‘like’ and comment on your friends photos in the aggregated feed, and you can view friend’s individual feeds in-app.  Your friends list can be populated by your Twitter “following” list, which is a quick and easy way to get started.

Unfortunately it’s lacking online profiles or photo streams, so sharing photos outside the app isn’t easy.  Instagram is apparently working on this and other features, so hopefully we’ll see them added with future updates.  But even though it’s limited in functionality, it’s still a really fun social experience and worth trying out.  Instagram won’t replace any of my camera or social media applications, but I love it as a compliment to them.  It is a free download, and according to the developer the core product will remain free.  It’s so much fun that I’d be willing to pay for additional filters and an online profile, and I’m looking forward to finding out what they’re planning on adding to the service.

It’s fun, it’s creative and it’s free, and definitely worth giving a try!
