My very first tattoo was sixteen years ago (oh dear, was it really that long ago? let’s just say i was 12 ok?) and although I don’t have any regrets, it was well overdue for a recolouring and some refreshing. Yellows and reds don’t last a lifetime and my little sun didn’t shine as brightly as it used to. And since tattoo shops and culture have changed a lot since then, I decided to take the opportunity to expand my little ‘off the wall’ piece into something designed just for me.
In those last sixteen years, that little sun and I have travelled across the country and back, living in four different cities. We’ve had many jobs, made many friends and most importantly experienced becoming a mother four times over. A lot has changed. Seven years ago I added another sun on my back to keep it company and to ensure I always have plenty of sunshine in my life no matter what kind of weather life throws at me. I love that sun – and I love the person who drew it for me – and wanted to have that kind of attachment to the sun on my arm.
So now my very first tattoo has been updated with a little colour, a little symbolism and whole lot more personality. I added four stars to it to represent my four babies, each one in their birthstone colour. It’s got a whole lot of my favourite colour, purple, and is more substantial than it was before.
It’s still healing up, and between being really really pale and a slow healer I think it will be a few weeks before I really know what it’s going to look like, but so far I’m very happy with it. I am having the teensiest bit of regret in not getting the sun done in black, but I’m hoping I like it more once my skin calms down and the tattoo heals (as you can see, my whole arm is red). One thing about tattoos; you never know exactly how it’s going to look until it’s done!
Here’s the before and after, and an in-progress. What do you think?
